Affects of Grammar

Grammar is important because it helps us to communicate clearly with those around us. If we don’t understand grammar, then it is difficult to understand the meaning behind someone’s words – which is a main problem on the internet today.

Understanding and caring about grammar allows users to take a step back and analyze what their true intentions are. I believe that an appreciation for grammar could solve a lot of debates that we see on the Youtube comment section of your favorite Justin Bieber Music Video.

“People associate grammar with errors and correctness. But knowing about grammar also helps us understand what makes sentences and paragraphs clear and interesting and precise.Grammar can be part of literature discussions when we and our students closely read the sentences in poetry and stories. And knowing about grammar means finding out that all languages and all dialects follow grammatical patterns.”
(Haussamen, Brock, et al. “Some Questions and Answers About Grammar,” 2002.)

Your vs You’re

This is a pretty simple rule to understand. “Your” is used when describing an object that you own (it is POSSESSIVE). For example; your house, your insecurities, your pet iguana.

“You’re” is a combination of “you” and “are,” so that is how you should be using it. You’re a homeowner, you’re insecure, you’re a loyal pet owner.

If you’re having trouble remembering this, just pretend your sentence is you are and see if it fits. If it doesn’t, you probably need to use “your.” You can say you are a pain, but you cannot say you are homework.

Their, There, or They’re.

“Their” is talking about someone else’s possessions. That hot chocolate isn’t mine, it’s theirs, and they said I couldn’t have any.

“There” is referring to a place. It’s over there. Next to my dog’s ashes. No, not there – There! Look at what I am pointing to! It’s right there!

“They’re” is simply “They are.” They’re usually nice to me. They’re not the ones who will sneak into your house at night and eat all your whipped cream. They’re just not like that.

Who vs. Whom vs. Whose vs. Who’s

Yeah, that’s a lot to uncover, but we can do this.

“Who” refers to the subject of a sentence. Who is going to help me eat this entire sheet cake? Or I could just eat it on my own. . .

“Whom” is when you are making the person an object. Whom should I talk to about throwing their seriously expired milk out of the freaking fridge? Because I don’t wanna do it, but it’s starting to stink.

“Whose”  is what you say when you’re figuring out possession. For example, whose decapitated head is that?

“Who’s”  is simply “Who is.” Like, who’s still getting this rule wrong? Who’s going to learn how to do these things properly?”

Grammar Lessons

Say goodbye to internet frustration! Our goal is to ensure that all internet users take a simple grammar quiz before they have access to the internet. Sorry Uncle Harry, if you want to talk to me about how the earth is flat on Facebook, then you better start using the right our/are!
